Description:

In Gaelic, Toiteach a Dhà translates to Smoky Two. It is the follow-up to the 2007 launch of the peaty Bunnahabhain Toiteach. Because it contains 75% sherry and 25% bourbon casks, it is intended to be richer and smokier than other Bunnas (around 40 ppm). According to rumors, it might be close to ten years old.

Dry smoke and icy ashes are present on the nose. Not a peat bomb, but nonetheless displaying charred oak, crushed peppercorns, and scorched grass. Some lemon zest lifted. In the distance, there are walnuts, cinnamon, and orange peel. Overall, it feels a little youthful, and the sherry is not overpowering.

It is smokey, oily, and peppery in the mouth. With a faint alcoholic undertone, simple, sweet pear drops, and cooked apple, it is still rather young, but it becomes more nuanced with the addition of wood spice, mint, ginger, chocolate, and oranges. After a while, it becomes lightly sweet but lacks the typical sherry richness. Salty sea air and subtle tobacco. Little cocoa undertones near the finish.

The drink has a medium finish, with aromas of citrus, dry, earthy smoke, and a brief flash of coffee beans.

Although it works well, this is more peated than sherried. The traditional Bunnahabhain spirit now has a robust spiciness and a slight sherry dryness, which go well together. This NAS expression offers reasonable complexity and excellent value for the money, given the low cost. For those on a budget looking for Islay whisky, this is an intriguing choice.
