Since James Burrough, a pharmacist-turned-distiller officially started selling the product in 1876 (although its origins probably date back several years earlier), Beefeater has been producing its traditional London Dry gin in the same way, using the same nine botanicals that make up its delicate-yet-spicy flavor today.

These botanicals also include juniper, orris root, angelica root and seed, coriander seed, almond, licorice root, and the peels of lemons and Seville oranges. And it's fortunate that they didn't tamper too much with Burrough's pharmacist's accuracy because Beefeater's botanical balance is spot on and is equally delectable when sipped alone as it is when mixed.

In the last several years, the gin industry has exploded. Many distillers have tried their hand at mixing various flowers, fruits, herbs, roots, and berries, only to discover that the wrong combination produces liquid pharmacy potpourri. Getting each of the ingredients macerated (or distilled) to a good harmonizing effect is more difficult than one may imagine. In order to create its fragrant gin, Beefeater extracts the greatest qualities from a variety of botanicals by macerating them for 24 hours in neutral grain spirit before re-distilling them.

The aroma is traditional and London Dry, with a juniper that is pine-forward and a hint of subtle citrus zest.

There are flavors. Lemon citrus hints, followed by a juniper buildup. Nearly the entire middle of the palate is juniper. Later, though, the nuance of richness and earthiness that completes the picture emerges. The roundness is provided by coriander, licorice, and darker, more bitter citrus rind notes.

The medium-length finish has notes of lemon zest, juniper with a hint of pine, and clean, freshly ground coriander. As it dissipates, a little warmth lingers on the palate. Beefeater Gin is powerful at 47% yet is both smooth and gentle. When someone wants to taste a traditional gin for the first time, I recommend Beefeater because it is the most approachable of the gins from its age.
