Description:
A new Kavalan Triple Sherry Cask was introduced by the Taiwanese Kavalan distillery in November 2021. It is aged in a blend of three different kinds of sherry casks, including Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez, and the more expensive Moscatel sherry, as the name would imply. The idea was to combine the sweetness of the two other types of sherry casks with the dried fruits from the Oloroso.
It has a very rich, clear, and aromatic nose. A glut of overripe red berries, fig bread, dates, blueberries, and a few fresh grapes are all present, along with brown sugar pastry, cinnamon, and toffee. Additionally, a distinct floral woody aroma (rose petals, fresh herbs) that is very similar to that found in well-aged cognac.
It has not been as weak on the mouth as I had anticipated. More dates, rum raisins, candied fruits, and honey sweetness are all evident, making this dish very substantial. Crimson oranges There is some pressure-cooked, woody flavor there, but the intensity prevents any dryness. Christmas cake, clove, and lots of sweetness from the caramel.
The medium-bodied finish has a nutty undertone, more chocolate, and caramel. The toasted wood is now fairly noticeable.
They set out to make a smooth whisky, and they succeeded admirably. What about the traditional Kavalan Solist sherry bombs? No, but it does have a rich sherry flavor with a hint of oriental flair. Despite the "painting by numbers" method and the potential for a higher ABV, the price is reasonable. The first places this will be sold are in Asia, Australia, Canada, and France.
